Flossing Keeps You Healthy
By K. Laws
Two years ago my son decided to attend college to become a Dental Assistant. At the time I thought I knew everything about proper oral care but his journey through school opened my eyes to th importance of taking care of our teeth everyday. As he learned, our household became hostage to his growing knowledge about oral hygiene. We were quizzed regulary about our dental routine, and followed into the bathroom so he could make sure that we were brushing properly. My son became our teacher, and more than once someone was asked to open their mouth for an impromtu examination. We all complied, sometimes not so willingly but he never took no for an answer. He was realizing that our oral health is key to our overall well being and wanted to make sure that we took care of our teeth. What I learned from him is that: - Flossing is the number one key to good oral health. Plaque resides between our teeth, and if we don't floss regularly, it will travel into our blood stream, block our arteries, and can cause heart attacks especially in men. - Always floss before brushing your teeth as this will reduce your risk of developing peridontal disease. - Brush your teeth no less than two minutes. Spend at least thirty seconds brushing each of the four quadrants of your mouth. - Always use a mouth rinse after brushing your teeth. This will kill disease causing bacteria. - Make brushing your teeth an everyday habit, preferably two to three times a day for the best results. - Have regular check ups with your dentist, and get your teeth cleaned often. This helps to maintain your overall health. Not brushing your teeth on a daily basis will allow problems to develop within the oral cavity, and can be quite expensive to correct. As adults we only have one set of teeth, so take care of them. You will maintain your pearly white smile, and your health will be better for it. My son has graduated, and loves sharing the information with the young patients that come into the dental office because he says if they learn how to take care of their teeth at a young age, they will grow into healthy adults. Our household still under go random spot checks, and even though we call him the teeth police as a joke, we appreciate it because we know that he has our best interest at heart.

Back in the 1940's, when I was a kid, our parents didn't know about flossing or making regular trips to the dentist for preventive oral health, Karen. Thank you for sharing this advise. Keep up the good work. Best wishes, Frederick

Thank you Fredrick. Our parents weren't able to get the information that is now readily available to us. A lot of health issues are directly related to oral health so they may have suffered unnecessarily because of the lack of info which is unfortunate. It's very important to share info like this because even though we may be aware of the health risks in our part of the world, others still don't have access to, or knowledge of how important it is to take care of their teeth. Have a great week. Warm Regards, Karen.
Anyone who wants to be the teeth police should definitely take a career in dentistry. I think the kind of food one eats is a very big factor too.

lol... yes they should Janet! Brushing after meals/snacks is very important to help reduce the risk of food staying stuck between our teeth, which can lead to plaque, cavities, and other problems.
Oh, that we had this information in our younger days. Many of my friends have dentures now and that can't be fun! My parents, even though they had quite a few children, made sure that we had regular dental appointments. I thank them now!! As usual .. an informative and interesting intel.
