Writer's Block
Writer's block is, specifically, the confusion of two seperate states: A) Flow State B) Editing State The Flow State is where you are drifitng, allowing your imagination to come up with ideas, writing your unedited text, gathering materials etc. The Editing State begins when you start examining, and judging the ideas you came up with. At this stage you are scrutinizing everything carefully. These States Must NEVER Be Confused! * If you don't combine these two states, you will never suffer from writer's block. You may be writing nonsense, but you will always be able to write. The great truth is - if you write enough, continue to read great writing, and stay focused on your end result, your writing will begin to improve. * Experiment in different environments to find the one which best supports the flow of your writing. Some people listen to music, sit in parks, or close to water. Others may find a quiet corner in the room helpful. Experiment until you find what works for you. Set Some Time Aside Each Day And Write! Even if you can only spare 30 minutes a day, write something and your flow will dramatically increase. Eg: If you're writing a short story, you can use those 30 minutes to: - Create 3 characters on three different index cards. - Brainstorm your plot line. - Write dialouge. - Make story notes. When writing give yourself permission to think preposterously so that you can move beyond the obvious and allow your story line to have a magnificent breakthrough. |
